The GenXers are coming, The GenXers are coming… …Better yet, make that, 'The GenXers are already here.' With apologies to Paul Revere, there really is no cause for alarm. Actually, whether you are a GenXer, a Baby Boomer, or a member of another generation, the call is really one that should alert you to an expanding and shifting marketplace. And greater opportunities. The GenXers, those between the ages of approximately 20 and 40, are making their mark in the business world and upon the marketplace on a scale comparable to that of their parents - the Baby Boomers - before them. And like the Baby Boomers, they are changing the way business is being conducted. The key is to be prepared, especially now that the last members of Generation X are entering the workforce. Here are a few basic pointers to keep in mind:
In a very general sense, GenXers have different business ideals than those of their parents or of previous generations. They prefer to do business not only in different ways, but just as importantly, under different time constraints. Faster results are a primary goal of GenXers. The most popular form of business communication used by Generation X is email. Email provides the fast, almost instantaneous communications they desire. Plus, email usage is fairly typical of the way GenXers have latched on to new technologies. They were born into the technology era, have accepted the fast-paced world of technology and progressed under its capabilities. Peek inside any business environment that has a number of Generation X employees or managers. Where the traditional way of doing business included one-on-one meetings, phone calls, overnight deliveries and snail mail, Generation X-influenced companies prefer to use email, faxing, videophone conferencing, e-commerce, B2B and other technology-based methods for conducting business. As fast as technology has provided all of us with more options for communication and doing business, GenXers have picked up the ball even faster and leaned to put new technologies to use. To grab your share of the GenXer market, incorporate applicable technologies that make sense for your business.
GenXers, characteristically, also are more adaptable to different work environments and are less likely to commit themselves to any one company, unlike many in the Baby Boomer generation. Downsizing, technology advancements, new opportunities - all these factors and more have contributed to a less stable, more adaptable work environment. While many in the elder generations are adapting, the GenXers are the generation that seems to be embracing the now constantly changing work environment. With so many companies employing GenXers, it is inevitable that some have loosened their reigns a bit. Running a company is more of a team effort now than in the past. Management is more accepting of GenXers' ideas, advice, creativity and knowledge. This, in turn, is helping companies adapt their marketing and business focus to include GenXers as a greater part of their market share. So don't be surprised if your next staff meeting, which might typically run over three or more hours, is via internet conferencing and finishes in less than half the time. A GenXer probably organized it. Contributing Editor: Shannon Rodgers
