WHAT I DID ON MY VACATION

Yeah, yeah, we know. We know! This column is supposed to be about valuable marketing tips that can help you attract customers and increase your bottom line. "What do vacations have to do with marketing?" you ask.

Plenty.

You worked hard all year, and it’s finally time to spend a week or more away from the business. Now, before you pack your cell phone, laptop and three weeks’ worth of work…

Forget about it. Don’t pack the cell phone. Don’t pack your work. And for heavens sake, leave your laptop at home. You’re supposed to be going on vacation.

We can’t force you not to think about work, but we can make your vacation a little less stressful. (Vacations are for relaxing, aren’t they?)

Instead of packing the latest electronic marvels so you’ll be sure to stay in touch with the office, pack a notebook, binder or writing tablet instead. That way, when an idea races through your head (and we know that’s going to happen plenty of times while you’re away), write it down. Then go back to your Mai Tai, your book, that quiet, contemplative overlook in the mountains, or what have you.

The pen and writing tablet work the same way if someone passes on a recommendation when you get into a conversation about business, or if those growth plans you’ve been worried about the last six months suddenly come into focus. Jot everything down, then get back to your vacation.

The ideas that pop up during vacations are sometimes right on target. Sometimes, though, they’re best left in the dark recesses of your mind where they will never see the light of day. Either way, don’t dwell on them once you’ve written them. Save that for when you get back to the office. Once back on the job, you can review the ideas you’ve written down, act on them or erase them.

Until then, don’t give them a second thought. You’ve safely written down so there’s nothing more to fret about.

Welcome to summer. Enjoy your break, you earned it.

(Just make sure you bring the tablet back with you. Heh, heh.)
